Walter J. Mathews concentrates his practice on securities and commercial litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts, FINRA arbitrations, and before the SEC, FTC, and CFTC. He is also a Florida Supreme Court certified civil circuit mediator.

From 2002 to 2006, Mr. Mathews served as Senior Counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Enforcement, Southeast Regional Office — investigating and prosecuting securities fraud cases including fraudulent unregistered offerings, accounting fraud, insider trading, market manipulation, options backdating, Sarbanes-Oxley violations, and Regulation D violations. He has personally represented the interests of hundreds of investors in federal receiverships and has served as counsel to the Receiver in high-profile Ponzi scheme cases including SEC v. Viatical Capital and SEC v. Americash-Inc.com.

Prior to the SEC, Mr. Mathews was an associate at Mandel & McAliley LLP (1999–2000), where he focused on securities and commercial litigation and served as counsel to a Receiver in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme. He then joined Tew Cardenas LLP in Miami (2000–2001), where he represented both plaintiffs and defendants in securities and commercial litigation and litigated NASD arbitrations on behalf of claimants and respondents.

Mr. Mathews received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1999 and his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1991. He is admitted to the Florida Bar and to practice before the United States District Courts for the Southern, Middle, and Northern Districts of Florida, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Mathews has completed four marathons and enjoys sailing, skiing, and physical fitness. He resides in Fort Lauderdale with his wife and two sons.
